This Ojibway woman is originally from a small community in Northwestern Ontario-Sioux Lookout. She was told by her ancestors that she belongs to the Migizi Clan on her grandmothers’ side. Mary’s mother was directly impacted by the Residential School system for thirteen years. Her life experience was influenced by the intergenerational impacts of the Residential School which led her to pursue her dreams in supporting Indigenous women and children fleeing domestic abuse and violence.
With a Native Studies and an Addictions background, Mary joined the team at Minwaashin Lodge in 2005. She was hired as a Sexual Abuse Counselor/Case Manager before moving into the Acting Executive Director role in 2011. In 2014, Mary stepped into the Executive Director role full time which she holds to this present day.
Her dedication and compassion for the Indigenous community is a asset to Minwaashin Lodge and she will continue to work selflessly along side her strong women colleagues.
Minwaashin Lodge-Indigenous Women's Support Centre provides a range of programs and services to First Nation, Inuit, and Metis women and children who are survivors of domestic and other forms of violence. We also have an Indigenous 24 bed emergency VAW shelter for women and children fleeing violence which is always full prior to Covid.
